Tips

STICKING WITH THE DIET
  • Buy the food bible - To really initiate a new lifestlye, I recommend purchasing Dr. Gundry's Diet Evolution, so you can read and understand the sound theory behind what is written here on the diet schmiet blog. I refer to my food bible, nearly every day for recipes, to review Friendly & Unfriendly foods and to refresh my memory on the three phases of Dr. Gundry's Diet Evolution
  • Satisfying Your Sweet Tooth - Keep a chocolate bar in the fridge and break off a square or two when you're in need of something sweet. * Must be greater than 70% cocoa.
  • Keep up with your social life - You can eat out! Don't be shy to ask what ingredients are included in dishes and to request substitutions or omissions.  Most restaurants have a number of dishes that are completely the diet schmiet way of eating.
  • Eat slowly - Put your fork down in between bites and have a sip of wine or water.  Miraculously, the seemingly small amount of food on your plate will fill you up.
  • If you drink, find a reasonably-priced, favorite red wine or spirit that feels like a treat and enjoy it with your dinner.
  • Don't forget your nut snack - it curbs hunger and gives your brain fuel to burn in between meals.
  • If you love ice cream and miss it like I do, check out Dr. Gundry's recipe for Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream on page 263.
  • Load up on greens.  Make a huge salad with tons of greens.
COOKING - TECHNIQUES
COOKING - SHORT CUTS
  • Chop more than you need and keep the rest in the fridge.  Wash and chop "in bulk".  When you go shopping, wash your veggies and get them ready to use for later in the week.  If a recipe calls for half an onion, chop the whole thing and save what you don't need in the fridge.
  • Use a liquid egg product in your breakfast dishes.
  • Make salad dressing in bulk rather than mixing each time you prepare a salad.
  • Use a garlic press.  You don't even have to peel the cloves.  The press will squeeze out the garlic and leave the peel inside.
  • If you pack your lunch, chop and prep your salad fixings on your day off or when you have time and use them throughout the following week.
EQUIPMENT
SHOPPING & GROCERIES
  • Buy pre-chopped onions.  Onions are the perfect base for almost any cooked dish, but chopping can be teary and time consuming.
  • Buy bagged lettuce.  Check that it's prewashed and ready to use.  I love my salad spinner, but not everyone has time to wash and cut greens - especially if you're packing lunch and heading to work!
